ASAM’s 2026 Technical Seminar took place on March 18 in Munich, Germany, and offered insight into automotive standardization amid rapid technological change.

The agenda covered simulation, data management, diagnostics and test automation, with discussions underscoring interoperability, simulation credibility and data‑centric development. These themes emerged across sessions on ASAM standards OpenDrive, OpenScenario, OSI, ODS, SOVD, XIL, OTX, CMP, and digital‑twin integration through the Asset Administration Shell (AAS).

Cross-standard harmonization and the need to align toolchains across domains, suppliers and development stages remain priorities, with speakers citing inconsistent interpretations of ASAM specifications as a cause of fragmentation. Updates included co‑simulation workflows, higher‑fidelity OpenX modeling, interoperable data management, modular measurement architectures, digital‑twin concepts, ODD taxonomies and simulation‑quality assessment.

On October 23 at the Suburban Collection Showplace Novi, Michigan, standards organization ASAM gathered members and non-members from across the automotive ecosystem for its Regional Meeting North America 2025 to address the challenge of building safe, scalable and cost-effective autonomous driving technology 

Set against a backdrop of accelerated AI-driven development, automation and simulation in the USA, ASAM’s meeting reflected how global standards are adjusting to regional needs. The emphasis was on shared data formats, languages, data models and interfaces for AI-based testing and validation methods, integrating simulation workflows across tools and domains, software-defined vehicles (SDV), diagnostics and OTA updates.

Exciting additions to this year’s event included the free-to-attend Open Tech Forum, where speakers from Deepen AI, Deontic, LDRA, Parallel Domain, Cognata, Gapwaves, ETAS, ARRK and Safety Innovation of the Year award winner HAAS Alert, presented technologies, concepts and strategies. There was also a ‘Specifying an ODD’ workshop led by Edward Schwalb, an expert consultant who supports the development of tooling for operational design domain specification and validation at Volkswagen, and a networking lunch hosted by Women in Automotive Technology (WAT).

The ADAS & Autonomous Vehicle Technology Summit conference (rates apply) opened this morning at the San Jose McEnery Convention Center.

Vivetha Natterjee, an autonomous vehicle safety specialist at Zeekr Technology Europe, kicked things off with a presentation titled ‘Robotaxi revolution: accelerating global deployment with AI and the emerging legal framework for Level 4 autonomy’, in which she examined how regions such as the EU, China, Germany, UK and the USA are pioneering harmonized legal standards that define operational domains, liability, cybersecurity and remote monitoring for Level 4 autonomy

Next on the agenda came an extended safety deep dive from Philip Koopman, faculty emeritus at Carnegie Mellon University, who emphasized that “removing the human driver fundamentally changes what we actually mean by acceptable safety.”

Day 1 of the conference also includes an overview of California’s framework for regulating automated driving systems (SAE Level 3-4) by Miguel Acosta, chief of the Autonomous Vehicles Branch at the CA DMV.
