AVL and QinetiQ have signed an MoU to collaborate on the use of model-based system engineering (MBSE) and digital twin solutions to develop and bring into operation new defence and commercial vehicles.
The partnership will see the delivery of new digital and real-world testing and evaluation services at QinetiQ’s Hurn Proving Ground in the New Forest in the UK, with AVL providing advanced vehicle modeling and simulation services as well as a digital twin of the Hurn facility.
Defense platforms and mobility programs require an integrated capability that unites physics-based modeling, digital twin and virtual and field testing across diverse operating environments, the companies said. AVL and QinetiQ have formed this strategic partnership combining their expertise to support defense and mobility programs across the development lifecycle, to “identify, explore and pursue opportunities within defence procurement, autonomous systems and land mobility programs”.
The combination of AVL’s expertise in simulation-driven development, virtual validation and digital twin technologies and QinetiQ’s defense system expertise, operational analysis and physical test and evaluation, will support customers in the development and validation of defense systems using a common digital foundation. This integrated approach accelerates innovation, mitigates program risk and optimizes physical testing to support more effective lifecycle management and reduce time to field.
Tom Stone, managing director, AVL Powertrain UK, said, “We are proud to partner with QinetiQ and combine our complementary capabilities in digital engineering, simulation and real-world testing. Together, we can help advance the development of mobility solutions for defense applications by increasing design maturity earlier in the development process, reducing physical testing requirements and supporting more efficient lifecycle optimization.”
Will Blamey, chief executive, UK Defense, QinetiQ, added, “This new virtual offering will enable our customers to develop and test new capabilities more quickly, before being put through their final paces at our specialized test facility. The combined evidence from digital and live environments will bring greater insight and value for money, enabling issues to be identified earlier and better-informed decisions to be taken.”
