Single camera from e-con Systems enables day-to-night vision

e-con Systems has launched the STURDeCAM57, a 5MP global shutter RGB-IR GMSL2 camera designed to deliver reliable, context-rich vision from day to night for applications such as driver monitoring systems (DMS) and occupant monitoring systems (OMS).

The camera is based on an automotive-grade image sensor and streams RGB and infrared frames as independent channels, providing AI vision systems with both full-color imagery and high-contrast infrared data from a single camera. It allows continuous monitoring across daylight, low-light and no-light conditions without requiring multiple sensors. It is optimized for seamless integration with platforms, including Nvidia Jetson.

The STURDeCAM57 features an on-board image signal processor (ISP). Unlike conventional approaches where RGB-IR processing is handled on the host, this ISP performs RGB-IR separation, demosaicing and color reconstruction directly within the camera. This removes dependency on host platforms, such as Nvidia Jetson, enabling systems to allocate more resources to AI inference and application processing.

The camera integrates 940nm IR illumination, combined with high quantum efficiency, ensuring reliable visibility in low-light and zero-light conditions. It also features an IP67-rated enclosure and operates reliably across extreme temperatures from −40°C to 85°C. The stream health monitoring and recovery feature ensures uninterrupted camera streaming by continuously monitoring the health of the sensor, ISP and GMSL link.

In addition to DMS and OMS, STURDeCAM57 is also well suited for a range of 5MP global shutter vision applications, including industrial automation and pick-and-place robotics.

“Building vision systems that perform reliably from day to night often requires multiple sensors or mechanical IR-cut filter switching, increasing system complexity and integration effort. With STURDeCAM57, we address this by delivering both color-based context and infrared visibility from a single camera – without mechanical switching. This simplifies system design while enabling reliable, continuous vision across lighting conditions,” said Suresh Madhu, business unit head, mobility at e-con Systems.
