It is the first production vehicle from a German auto maker with this technology.

The new steering feel benefits driving dynamics, maneuvering and parking. With steer-by-wire, the steering effort required from the driver can be further reduced and the driver no longer needs to adjust their grip on the steering wheel when turning. Vibrations caused by uneven road surfaces, which were previously transmitted to the driver via the steering wheel, can now be eliminated.

The foldable steering wheel responds to the industry’s transition toward high-level automation, where traditional steering wheels may limit interior space and layout flexibility. The design aims to support changes in interior layouts for autonomous vehicles and enable flexibility for those inside the vehicle.

Integrated with Tensor Robocar’s autonomous driving system, the steering wheel retracts in Level 4 mode – where the vehicle can handle all driving tasks within defined conditions without human intervention, clearing the driver’s area entirely. This transformation not only improves comfort but also reimagines the cabin as a multifunctional space.

Buzz AD vehicles. Developed by emotion3D, the software uses artificial intelligence to take over safety tasks previously managed by the driver. It automatically detects if the doors are clear, if an object is blocking the cabin floor and the lighting conditions inside the vehicle.

Additionally, it checks the permitted number of passengers and their correct use of seatbelts. Within a few seconds, the AI-supported software signals the self-driving vehicle to drive or, if necessary, hands over to the fleet control center.

Positioned on the vehicle’s roof for optimal visibility, the RSM integrates a polycarbonate panel to seamlessly house critical sensors.

In collaboration with Covestro, Webasto developed the module’s bezel using Makrolon AG2477, a transparent polycarbonate that facilitates effective sensor signal transmission. The bezel was manufactured on Covestro’s 2300-ton injection molding machine, incorporating Bayblend T95 MF, a black mineral-reinforced PC/ABS blend, for structural robustness and aesthetic appeal.

The collaboration’s goal was to meet stringent mechanical requirements while providing an attractive design with transparent sensor windows and glass-like surfaces, according to both companies.
