Schaeffler and VDL Groep are collaborating on the development and production of a new generation of self-driving shuttles for public transportation. A first demonstrator of the technology will be showcased at the IAA Mobility show in Munich, Germany, September 5-10. The shuttle’s autonomous driving systems will be provided by Mobileye.

Negotiations with public transportation authorities are underway to begin pilot testing; according to the project’s current roadmap, street testing of the shuttles may begin in 2025. Having approved SAE Level 4 for use on public roads, Germany is planned to be the first country where the shuttles will operate.

Intel’s Mobileye operation has unveiled a six-passenger, road-ready electric autonomous vehicle (AV) that will be used for commercial driverless ride-hailing services in Tel Aviv and Munich, starting in 2022, operating under the Moovit (which Intel acquired in 2020) and Sixt brands.

Mobileye says the AV was designed from the ground up to scale both economically and geographically while addressing the essential attributes of efficiency, accessibility and safety. It is the first AV to employ all features of the Mobileye trinity, including the True Redundancy sensing solution with cameras, radar and lidar sensors, Mobileye’s crowd-sourced Roadbook AV map, and Responsibility-Sensitive Safety (RSS) driving policy.

Automotive and industrial supplier Schaeffler and Mobileye, the Intel company developing automated driving solutions, have agreed a long-term cooperation agreement to advance the industrialization of autonomous vehicles.

“Rapid regulatory and technological change, increasing urbanization and growing social awareness of mobility are increasing the need for alternative, novel concepts such as autonomous people or logistics movers,” explained Matthias Zink, CEO, Automotive Technologies, Schaeffler.

“They play a crucial role in sustainable mobility and are a future field in our Roadmap 2025. With the partnership with Mobileye, we want to develop autonomous shuttles to series production.”

The rolling chassis from Schaeffler is to be combined with the Mobileye Drive self-driving system in order to develop a new, flexible platform for self-driving shuttles and other vehicle products capable of Level 4 automation, ideal for Mobility as a Service (MaaS) and Transportation as a Service (TaaS).

Chassis and driveline supplier Schaeffler says it is steadily increasing its involvement in autonomous mobility based on intelligent chassis systems. The company is set to release its Space Drive 3 Add-ON, the third generation of its Space Drive drive-by-wire system, a multiple redundant technology for autonomous driving systems. This will include its force-feedback handwheel actuator (HWA), as well as its safety- and comfort-enhancing intelligent rear-wheel steering (iRWS) technology.

Schaeffler says it has also developed a new rolling chassis that it claims opens the way to completely new forms of autonomous mobility. “Thanks to our work in this area, we are fast becoming the technology partner of choice for highly integrated chassis solutions,” said Matthias Zink, Schaeffler’s CEO of automotive technologies.

DTM (Deutsche Tourenwagen Masters, the German national touring car championship) team Rowe Racing is to debut a steer-by-wire system in one of its BMW M6 GT3 cars in the opening round of the DTM championship, which kicks off in June at Monza, Italy. The system will make its debut at the official DTM test this week at the Lausitzring.

The Space Drive steer-by-wire system is produced by Schaeffler Paravan and has no mechanical or hydraulic link between the steering wheel and the steering gear. Instead, a control unit transfers the driver’s steering movements, identified by a position sensor on the steering wheel, to an electric motor on the steering gear, which actuates the rack.

Held at the American Center for Mobility’s (ACM) impressive Willow Run proving ground, the Live Demo Day enabled ten leading companies to demonstrate their latest AV and ADAS development technology to hundreds of engineers and decision makers.

After three days of intensive product sourcing and networking at both exhibitions, visitors also got the chance to see some of the technology from the show in action at the ACM, which features roads and traffic set-ups to simulate the breadth of situations an automated vehicle might encounter.

Held alongside Automotive Testing Expo Novi, the event attracted thousands of visitors eager to experience live demonstrations and see new launches from a range of ADAS and AV technology leaders, including AB Dynamics, Aimotive, Aimsun, American Center for Mobility, Ann Arbor SPARK,  Anyverse, AVL, b-plus, C-MORE Automotive, dSPACE, Foretellix, Keysight Technologies, MSC Software, NIRA Dynamics, Siemens and VBOX Racelogic.

“We came to see all the new technology and to see if we can implement anything from here,” said Jesse Thomas, an electrical technician visiting from General Motors.

Three more companies have confirmed their participation at the new Live Demo Day, which takes place at the American Center for Mobility (ACM), on Friday October 25, effectively extending the  Autonomous Vehicle Technology Expo in Novi by a further day.

New Eagle, Humanetics and S-E-A are the most recent additions to the program, which will see the latest AV and ADAS testing technology put through its paces ‘live’ at ACM’s extensive Willow Run proving grounds. They join AB Dynamics, AVL, Racelogic, Moshon Data, Keysight and Schaeffler Group.
