Ouster lidar to support GUSS autonomous orchard machines

GUSS Automation – a John Deere subsidiary – plans to integrate Ouster’s Rev8 OS0 native-color digital lidar sensors, powered by Ouster’s L4 Ouster Silicon, into its next-generation autonomous orchard machines. The technology is expected to enhance machine capabilities and support autonomous operation in complex outdoor environments.

GUSS is applying Ouster’s sensing technology to the demanding conditions of autonomous agriculture, where dense orchards and vineyards can make navigation challenging. The integration addresses limitations of traditional GPS, which may not provide the centimeter-level precision required for safe and accurate machine operation.

Through the planned integration of Ouster’s Rev8 OS0 digital lidar, GUSS aims to enhance perception for autonomous operations. The ultra-wide field of view enables driverless sprayers to map tree trunks, crop rows and ground contours, while dense 3D point-cloud data supports navigation and obstacle detection across varied outdoor and lighting conditions.

“At GUSS, we are focused on developing autonomous solutions that help growers address the unique challenges of high-value crop production,” said Jason Brantley, vice president of production systems, small ag and turf at John Deere. “Integrating advanced sensing technologies into our machines helps support reliable operation in complex orchard environments and provides growers with tools designed to improve productivity and operational flexibility.”

Ouster’s Rev8 architecture delivers a unique combination of highly accurate, dense 3D depth data, high dynamic range native color and extreme structural ruggedness. Engineered to meet the rigorous demands of production deployments in unstructured settings, the Rev8 platform reportedly brings enhanced environmental resilience to the field.

The planned Rev8 integration will add native-color lidar sensing to GUSS machines, helping them operate in challenging orchard conditions such as dust, spray and dense vegetation. The technology allows a single operator to monitor up to eight autonomous machines simultaneously, while the lidar-based autonomy platform could also support other orchard and vineyard operations beyond spraying.

“John Deere’s decision to integrate Ouster’s Rev8 digital lidar technology represents an important milestone for the future of American agriculture,” said Ouster CEO Angus Pacala. “As GUSS leverages Ouster’s digital lidar in its autonomous fleet, we are empowering growers to achieve new levels of precision and efficiency. This announcement is about more than technology. It is about scaling reliable solutions that make agricultural operations more resilient and sustainable.”
