Held at the American Center for Mobility’s (ACM) impressive Willow Run proving ground, the Live Demo Day enabled ten leading companies to demonstrate their latest AV and ADAS development technology to hundreds of engineers and decision makers.

After three days of intensive product sourcing and networking at both exhibitions, visitors also got the chance to see some of the technology from the show in action at the ACM, which features roads and traffic set-ups to simulate the breadth of situations an automated vehicle might encounter.

The first presentation in Room B on Wednesday was given by Vince Socci, who shared National Instruments’ take on validating the vision sensors for ADAS.

The presentation kicked off the ‘Vision – Sensors and Lidar Test and Development’ session with a solid foundation in the testing challenges and how to solve them. After all, safe autonomous vehicles require clear vision of the world around them. The vehicle’s ‘eyes’ (radars, cameras, lidars, ultrasound, V2X) and ‘brain’ (ECU, sensor fusion) need a vision test to ensure they pick up any hazards and are able to navigate traffic safely and comfortably.

Solution consultant Kandarp Patel explains, “We are a product development company – we help in the development of any product, all the way from concept to delivery. Eighty percent of the cars and planes you see out there are made using our software. We can do everything virtually, not only driving-wise; we can also simulate the crash, how the dirt is going to be collected on the sensors and so on.

FCA is one of 11 companies taking part in the Safety First for Automated Driving (SaFAD) initiative, which sets out a framework for the development of safe automated driving systems.

The collective work defines 12 guiding principles of safe automated driving development for SAE Level 3 and Level 4 automated driving systems, derived from a comprehensive collection of publications and recommendations from public authorities and consumer associations. It applies the principles to the development lifecycle of automated driving technology, covering requirements development through verification and validation and continuing beyond product deployment.

Compared with the company’s other systems, the Quanta is intended for easy integration, allowing developers to create their own breakout box around the development board, rather than having to integrate the existing box into a vehicle. It allows developers to have the velocity, position and orientation of the car, and can integrate that data with other data, such as sensor data from lidar, radar and cameras.

“This kind of device is an engineer’s bread and butter, because they’re able to play with the PCB board, making it better for integration in an existing system,” says a company spokesperson.

What will you be speaking about?

The path to achieving highly automated driving differs across solutions providers and auto makers, but a few priorities are similar – comfort and safety. Improvements in traditional sensors such as camera, radar and lidar have greatly increased the perception capabilities of autonomous vehicles, but without HD maps, AVs cannot accurately understand their position on the road and plan their path for the road ahead.

The main aim of the initiative is to make fully self-driving vehicles a reality through industry-level collaboration. It will do this, in a first step, by developing a set of recommendations for a system architecture and a computing platform that reconciles the performance requirements of autonomous systems with the vehicle-specific requirements and resulting limitations of size, temperature range, power consumption and safety.
