US car manufacturer General Motors (GM) is expanding the availability of Cadillac’s Super Cruise hands-free driving system to an additional 70,000 miles of highway in the USA and Canada.
Super Cruise-enabled Cadillac CT6 models come equipped with a combination of lidar map data, high-precision GPS technology, a state-of-the-art driver attention system (DAS) and a network of camera and radar sensors to help them safely navigate suitable roads.
Some of the new Super Cruise highways include limited intersections and traffic control devices meaning that drivers are alerted to take back control of the vehicle for railroad crossings, pedestrian crossings, stoplights and stop signs.
To enable the expanded functionality, an enhancement to the Super Cruise system will be available for 2018 and 2019 Cadillac CT6 owners through their dealership.
In addition to the mileage expansion, the software update will also include performance improvements, enhancements to increase Super Cruise availability and enhancements to the DAS. The expansion will make the hands-free driver assistance feature available for a total of more than 200,000 miles of highway by the fourth quarter of 2019.
“We are constantly working to make Super Cruise the most beneficial system for our customers,” said Mario Maiorana, Super Cruise chief engineer, Cadillac. “Expanding our offering of compatible highways will allow people the ease and convenience of traveling hands-free more often.”
Customers have traveled 2.5 million miles using Super Cruise in the CT6. It will also be available on Cadillac’s all-new CT5 sedan next year.
