Mobileye partners with US auto maker on hands-free driving

Mobileye has announced that a US-based auto maker has selected its EyeQ6H system-on-chip to support future advanced driver assistance systems with hands-free driving on select highways across millions of vehicles globally. Mobileye estimates that it will deliver approximately nine million EyeQ6H units to this auto maker.

The auto maker will offer Mobileye’s Surround advanced driver assistance system (ADAS) as standard equipment on many mainstream and premium models using software-defined vehicle architectures. Compared with first-generation hands-free, eyes-on highway ADAS, Mobileye Surround reduces costs and supports ECU consolidation by integrating software and multiple driving functions on a single chip and ECU – a key feature for software-defined vehicles.

“This selection of Mobileye Surround ADAS by one of the world’s great auto makers reflects the power of our approach to democratizing safety and technology,” said Mobileye president and CEO Prof. Amnon Shashua. “Leveraging the EyeQ6H as a powerful central processor for ADAS enables better performance, increased features and greater flexibility to auto makers and their customers, all at a lower cost.”

Surround ADAS is a software-defined suite of safety and convenience features designed for specific areas and conditions, drawing on Mobileye’s two decades of automated driving experience. Using the latest AI advances, up to 11 cameras and radar sensors can be processed by a single EyeQ6H chip, combining computer vision, sensor fusion and REM crowdsourced driving data.

A typical Mobileye Surround ADAS system uses one forward-looking high-resolution camera, four corner parking cameras and multiple radars. These systems can enable hands-free, eyes-on driving in designated areas and conditions up to 130km/h, with automated lane change, highway traffic jam assist and cut-in protection. The system is also designed to bolster safety with advanced blind-spot detection, evasive maneuver assist, increased pedestrian detection and driver monitoring integrated into the EyeQ operation, along with optional automated parking solutions.

A key enabler of hands-free driving is Mobileye’s REM crowdsourced data, which covers nearly all highways and arterial roads in the US and Europe, and over 90% of roads in major Asian markets. More than eight million vehicles across 18 brands and 50 models currently collect anonymized REM data worldwide. The high processing power of the EyeQ6H also supports over-the-air updates for future features and includes robust cybersecurity protections.
