Technology company Rohde & Schwarz and software company IPG Automotive have introduced a complete hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) automotive radar test solution.

The solution combines IPG Automotive’s CarMaker simulation software with Rohde & Schwarz’s AREG800A radar object simulator and QAT100 advanced antenna array, enabling vehicle manufacturers to simulate ADAS/AD scenarios.

This partnership aims to bring autonomous driving (AD) testing “from the proving ground to the development lab”, the companies says, thereby reducing costs.

IPG Automotive’s CarMaker simulation solution enables development and end-to-end testing of cars and light commercial vehicles across all development stages. The company says it can provide a high-resolution 3D engine for detailed simulation of the complete sensor stack and integration into existing tool landscapes, with support for various standards and interfaces.

The R&S AREG800A, in conjunction with the R&S QAT100, generates multiple artificial objects with independent range, radar cross section (RCS), angle and radial velocity. The open simulation interface (ASAM OSI) links the R&S AREG800A with CarMaker HIL test automation, facilitating a realistic driving scenario assessment within radar HIL testing.

Additionally, the solution includes a scenario editor designed for non-simulation experts, aiming to simplify the testing process for maneuver-based driving scenarios.

IPG’s CarMaker also uses a test manager that builds and runs automated test sequences individually or simultaneously, locally or in the cloud. It automates the calculation and evaluation of key performance indicators (KPIs) and generates reports automatically.

CarMaker can also help define the configuration of virtual vehicle prototypes, which IPG says enhances simulation realism and accuracy for testing and development purposes.

Andreas Höfer, chief technology officer at IPG Automotive, said, “With the collaboration between Rohde & Schwarz and IPG Automotive, we intend to provide the automotive industry with a comprehensive hardware-in-the-loop integration test solution, bringing tests from the proving ground into the lab, resulting in significant time and cost savings in the development process.”
