This certification sets a precedent for the secure, standardized integration of AI into autonomous driving technologies. As AI becomes increasingly central to advanced mobility, enhancing sensing capabilities, real-time decision-making and overall system intelligence, it also introduces critical safety challenges due to its complexity and unpredictability. Addressing these challenges requires structured assurance processes that are globally recognized.

Published in December 2024, ISO/PAS 8800 is the first global standard specifically developed to address AI safety in the automotive sector.

The partnership responds to the growing cybersecurity risks associated with connected vehicles, with OEMs now required to implement robust systems and processes to ensure vehicle and user protection. The UNECE regulations, effective from July 2024, mandate compliance for selling vehicles within its 56 member states. Key among these are Regulation R155, which addresses cybersecurity management, and Regulation R156, which governs software update processes.

Named the ExpleoSmeeta Briefcase, the solution consists of a cybersecurity testing framework (ExpleoSmeeta) and a suite of hardware components to enable security assessments, cyber forensics and pen tests to be carried out within automotive applications.

With today’s vehicles running on 100 million lines of code, with several wireless connections, software-reliant modes of transport must be secure, with a high level of cybersecurity for increased vehicle and passenger safety.

Cybersecurity threats include RFID being used to access and start vehicles via electronic key fobs, GPS being tricked to hide stolen vehicles, vehicle sensors being compromised and potentially putting a driver or passenger at risk, or a wireless connection being hacked, enabling personal data to be taken or malicious firmware to be uploaded to a vehicle.
