Surrey NanoSystems has unveiled Vantablack Vision, its light-suppression coating designed for automotive ADAS and various industrial applications. The company said that this marks a significant step in advancing technologies that enhance road safety and system integrity.

Vantablack Vision is a two-component coating applied with conventional spray technology, aligning with Surrey NanoSystems’ commitment to delivering unparalleled optical performance. Specifically formulated for ADAS applications, Vantablack Vision addresses challenges associated with optical performance and environmental stability – two crucial factors for high-integrity ADAS.

In collaboration with the Filk Freiberg Institute in Germany, Vantablack Vision has undergone rigorous testing, which has reportedly revealed unprecedented environmental stability, a critical requirement for ADAS. According to Surrey NanoSystems, the formulation of Vantablack Vision not only ensures exceptional optical performance but also addresses challenges related to extreme temperature fluctuations, making it suitable for enclosed spaces subjected to harsh conditions.

Aidan Metcalfe, business development director at Surrey NanoSystems, emphasized the significance of Vantablack Vision in contributing to the automotive industry’s efforts to enhance overall safety standards for road users. The coating’s introduction is aligned with the industry’s roadmap to improve road safety through ADAS, categorized based on the degree of automation and the system’s ability to operate without driver intervention.

The implementation of ADAS involves sensors and transducers that continuously control critical driving functions, such as steering, braking and accelerating. The success of these systems relies on high-integrity sensors that accurately represent the environment within their field of view, regardless of external influences or environmental conditions.

Optical systems, including compact cameras used in automotive applications, face challenges related to veiling glare and glare caused by light transmitted through glass. Vantablack Vision addresses these challenges by suppressing stray light. It reportedly outperforms conventional approaches, such as matte black paint or flocking, thanks to its superior optical characteristics and environmental stability.

Vantablack Vision has also reportedly demonstrated its ability to withstand extended exposure to high temperatures without evolving volatile materials. Surrey NanoSystems says that the coating’s stability, even at temperatures exceeding 160°C, positions it as a reliable solution for ADAS applications.
