As part of a pilot in London, Ford fitted 160 light commercial vehicles with sensors to act as a distributed sensor system to collect data.

It captured multiple insights including how mobility solutions could reduce chaotic rush hour periods by a simple matter of timing.

There is a need for higher capacity, high performance storage, optimized for the myriad demands of the automotive environment.

On the road today there are an estimated 21 million connected vehicles, gathering endless terabytes of data. Gartner predicts that by 2020 the average connected vehicle will generate over 280 petabytes annually, with at least 4 TB of data being generated per day. That data comes from the on-board hardware, which includes cameras (generating 20-60MB/s), sonar (10-100 kB/s) radar (10kB/s), LIDAR systems (10-70MB/s) and GPS (50 kB/s).

The speed record was conducted on the 28GHz millimetre wave band and is 40 times faster than current fixed-line broadband speeds – the equivalent of transmitting the full contents of a high-definition movie in the less than 10 seconds.

With vehicle communication a vital factor for a future of autonomous driving, large quantities of data will be required to be transmitted with speed.

The researchers consulted more than 8,000 people across eight countries and also conducted in-depth interviews with privacy experts.

Only 20% of the study’s participants feel they have full control over their location data, with 44% sharing location data with apps and service providers unintentionally, despite trying to restrict access.

In the UK, only 12% know what personal data is collected about them. Despite this, UK consumers generally have a more positive attitude about sharing their location data than those in other markets – 29% of UK respondents share location data always or very often, more than the global average of 21%.
