The industry is embracing advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) and autonomous driving (AD) to chart the course for tomorrow’s vehicle. These capabilities already demonstrate clear benefits, from reducing collisions to improving driver safety on the road.

In order for AD/ADAS to grow successfully, there not only needs to be a step-by-step approach to reducing human interaction, but in building customer trust of the vehicle and adjacent systems as well.

Yanfeng Automotive Interiors, an automotive interior supplier, has unveiled a rideshare concept called the Experience in Motion demonstrator 2020 (XiM20). The pod-like vehicle features a dual-zone layout with an airy space at the front with two seats offering views through the large curved windshield, and at the rear there is a lounge-like cocoon for privacy.

The interior concept has the ability to customize its experience to the passenger’s journey through an array of technology including smart surfaces.

The project has delivered a cutting-edge infrastructure and ecosystem that will help boost the development of autonomous and connected vehicles in the UK. One of its biggest developments was a Vehicle to Infrastructure (V2X) test environment where it has installed ITS G5 (wireless) units on roads in Coventry that are able to relay warning messages from digital highway signs such as roadworks, accident, or traffic warnings to vehicles using in-vehicle messages.

Its connected vehicle-to-infrastructure (V2I) uses a Green Light Optimal Speed Advisory (GLOSA) system, which is able to ‘talk’ to traffic lights to find out their light cycles and then feed back to individual cars what the appropriate speed is to keep traffic flow steady.

The system is intended to improve congestion and reduce emissions by preventing drivers either harshly accelerating to beat the lights or suddenly braking.

The multi-million dollar project, which will be based at the University of Warwick’s Wellesbourne campus, will form a center that creates state-of-the-art autonomous technology and vehicle modular architectures, and prototype new vehicle systems.

Technology research projects at the Smart City Mobility Center will be able to benefit from regional developments of 5G being carried out by the West Midlands Combined Authority at the new £20m (US$25m) UK Mobility Data Institute.
