An autonomous excavator, the expansion of a self-driving bus trial and autonomous vehicles for airports, highways and city streets are among the latest projects to receive funding from the UK government’s CAM Pathfinder program.

Flannery – one of the UK’s largest plant hire businesses – and Gravis Robotics have secured funding from the first CAM Pathfinder Enable competition to develop a first-of-its-kind, automated excavator for the construction industry.

The UK construction industry is facing unprecedented demand over the next decade, with more than £530bn (US$717bn) earmarked for development. However, with an aging workforce and severe skills shortages looming, the organizations hope to demonstrate how embracing automation could help keep Britain building.

Hyundai Motor Group has named Junghyun Kwon as its new executive vice president and head of the Autonomous Driving Development Center. According to the company, Kwon will be pivotal in advancing Hyundai’s autonomous driving capabilities. He will report to Minwoo Park, president and head of the advanced vehicle platform division.

Kwon is an autonomous driving AI expert who has worked at leading global tech companies. He oversaw autonomous driving software development and commercialization at Nvidia. Most recently, Kwon led intelligent robot development at Samsung Electronics.

Drawing on his deep expertise in autonomous vehicle perception software, deep learning, machine learning and computer vision technologies, Kwon will lead the group’s autonomous driving technology development from conception through product commercialization.

A real-world pilot of teleoperated shuttle vehicles began on public roads at Düsseldorf Airport on July 13, run jointly by Rheinbahn, Rheinmetall and its subsidiary MIRA, together with Düsseldorf Airport. The partners are evaluating the deployment of remotely supervised and teleoperated vehicles under real operating conditions.

The shuttles operate between the airport railway station and the terminal area, with the surrounding environment – combining high traffic density, diverse mobility needs and interaction between transportation modes ranging from e-scooters to the Airbus A380 – providing what the partners describe as a demanding real-world test environment.

The pilot is designed to evaluate teleoperated mobility services under everyday conditions, focusing on operational performance in real traffic, integration into existing transportation networks, system reliability and acceptance among passengers and professional drivers.

AmiGo, the on-demand autonomous mobility service from Baidu’s Apollo Go and Swiss Post‘s PostBus, has announced that it has received a special permit from Switzerland’s Federal Roads Office (FEDRO) for Level 4 operations in eastern Switzerland. The vehicles began conducting open-road testing on June 1, 2026.

The FEDRO special permit confirms that AmiGo’s vehicles and autonomous driving system meet Switzerland’s defined safety and quality requirements, with AmiGo now carrying out autonomous driving trials with a safety operator in an approximately 80km² zone that spans the cantons of St Gallen, Appenzell Ausserrhoden and Appenzell Innerrhoden.

Bolt, Pony.ai and Stellantis have launched an autonomous mobility testing program in Luxembourg that will focus on validating the safety, performance and regulatory readiness of Pony.ai’s seventh-generation (Gen-7) autonomous vehicles in the country’s traffic environment. Stellantis will contribute its vehicle engineering and manufacturing expertise, with a midsize van based on its L4-Ready Platform.

The partners are preparing the pilot that is designed to test the technologies and operational processes required to support safe autonomous mobility in cities, from vehicle deployment and ride-hailing platform integration to fleet operations and regulatory coordination.

The pilot program builds on previously announced intended collaborations between Stellantis, Pony.ai and Bolt to advance the development and deployment of autonomous mobility solutions in Europe.

Beep has announced that ATL Spoke, an autonomous transit pilot deployed in partnership with Atlanta Beltline, is now in service and open to the public. The ATL Spoke represents the first autonomous public transit in the City of Atlanta.

The 12-month pilot, funded by the Georgia Transportation Efficiency Authority, will evaluate how autonomous transit can support flexible, cost-effective neighbourhood circulation while complementing existing MARTA service.

Wayve, Uber and Nissan have become the latest organizations to join the Partners for Automated Vehicle Education United Kingdom (PAVE UK) initiative, which aims to ensure the responsible future deployment of automated vehicles across the UK

Wayve and Uber plan to deploy autonomous vehicles in London this year in an initial trial that hopes to increase public engagement and understanding of the technology.
