Valens Semiconductor has announced a collaboration with Onsemi on a cost-optimized integrated sensor for high-volume 3MP automotive camera applications. Through this collaboration the parties intend to give OEMs and Tier 1s a faster path to A-PHY.

Under the agreement, Valens will work with Onsemi on the cost-optimized A-PHY offering that can be integrated into Onsemi’s image sensors. The collaboration strengthens the A-PHY ecosystem by bringing together complementary expertise in connectivity and automotive imaging technologies. The technologies can enable driver monitoring, surround-view cameras, interior sensing, and ADAS displays and interfaces.

“This is a major milestone for Valens, MIPI A-PHY and for the automotive ecosystem as a whole,” said Yoram Salinger, CEO at Valens Semiconductor.

Autonomous vehicles without safety personnel remain some way from widespread deployment on German roads, but a nationwide consortium of transport operators, technology providers and authorities is working to prepare for their introduction.

Following the announcement of the KIRA+ project to test SAE Level 4 autonomous driving in local public transportation in Germany, a consortium group has announced that next month it is to begin co-developing a framework intended to streamline the approval process in the country for autonomous vehicle operating areas, with the aim of obtaining approval within around three months once the first vehicles reach the market.

A £3m (US$3.8m) UK government-backed autonomous driving research project led by Nissan, in partnership with Warwick Manufacturing Group (WMG) at the University of Warwick and PAVE UK, is exploring the deployment of autonomous passenger services in the UK.

The ADventure project will launch a mobility service in Cambridge to assess how autonomous driving services can be safely introduced and used by real-world communities.

Looking beyond vehicle technology, the project will study how an autonomous mobility service can operate in a real-world environment. Working alongside local authorities, commuters and residents, the project will examine how future AD technology can create social value, improve accessibility and address local transportation challenges.

Smart Eye has announced that it is to host a technology demonstration next month of a new multimodal in-cabin AI agent that can interpret context, decide what to do next and take action

The agent draws on multiple sources of input, including voice, driver identity, gaze, attention, emotion, driver state and occupancy, alongside information from the vehicle’s interior and exterior sensing systems.

Agentic AI can require significant computing resources, particularly for complex tasks. Adding multimodal context to each request can provide agents with more complete and targeted information, potentially reducing the processing required to reach a useful outcome.

BMW has announced that its 3D Maps will combine navigation, the vehicle’s surroundings and driver assistance information into a single view for BMW vehicles equipped with Operating System X, starting in October 2026. The integrated display will show how the vehicle perceives its surroundings and whether assistance functions are supporting the driver, from complex situations in city traffic to hands-free assisted driving on the highway.

The feature combines route guidance, the vehicle’s surroundings and driver assistance information, which enables drivers to see not only the next navigation step, but also how the vehicle perceives its surroundings and which assistance functions are supporting the driving task.

Pony.ai has announced that volume production is scheduled to begin later this year on a new model in its Gen-4 robotruck line-up, built on GAC Commercial Vehicle’s T9 battery electric heavy-duty truck platform. The vehicles will be deployed in long-haul freight, dedicated-route logistics and port transportation.

The model integrates Pony.ai’s Gen-4 L4 autonomous trucking system with GAC Commercial Vehicle’s fully redundant drive-by-wire chassis. Its steering, braking, communications, power supply, computing and sensing systems all feature fully redundant architectures to support safe operation across a wide range of conditions.

The vehicle is equipped with a fully automotive-grade autonomous driving kit comprising nine lidars, three millimeter-wave radars and 13 cameras, providing 360° sensing coverage with no blind spots.

Deep-tech startup IVEX has raised €5m (US$5.8m) Series A funding to accelerate its engineering roadmap and expands its presence in the USA and Asia. The round was backed by previous investors The Faktory and Dedicated, alongside private investors.

Assessing increasingly sophisticated advanced driver assistance systems and autonomous driving technologies requires manufacturers and testing organizations to analyze large volumes of camera, sensor and vehicle data. During on-road testing, engineers have traditionally reviewed footage, identified road signs and conditions, compared them with dashboard data and assessed the vehicle’s response. This manual process is difficult to scale without increasing engineering resources.
