Fresh from his extended conference presentation, ‘Understanding self-driving vehicle safety’, Phil Koopman, faculty emeritus at Pennsylvania’s Carnegie Mellon University, found time to further share his thoughts with AAVI in this exclusive interview filmed at ADAS & Autonomous Vehicle Technology Expo Europe 2025.

“You have to think bigger than the driver,” he explained. “If you want to be safe, you need to ask the ‘what if’ questions.”

New vehicles come with ADAS, but keeping sensors clean is a challenge. At ADAS & Autonomous Vehicle Technology Expo Europe, Vitesco Technologies showcased the advanced sensor cleaning system it has developed to address this issue. Wojciech Jurowitz, a project manager at the company, tells ADAS & Autonomous Vehicle International that this system, equipped with air and water cleaning components, a distributor, pump and high-pressure features, can clean up to 10 sensors swiftly. The air-blast component is crucial for removing dirt and water droplets, facilitating autonomous driving. Jurowitz explains that the system has been tested in a vehicle to demonstrate its functionality.

At ADAS & Autonomous Vehicle Technology Expo Europe, Teledyne Flir demonstrated the benefits of thermal imaging in ADAS. The company’s global head of business development, John Eggert, and engineering director and product manager – automotive, Chris Posch, explain to ADAS & Autonomous Vehicle International that thermal imaging enhances night vision and adds redundancy, and is advantageous over lidar systems due to its passive, lower-cost nature. They say that manufacturers are showing increased interest in thermal integration, particularly for Level 4 autonomous vehicles. At the expo, Teledyne Flir presented thermal cameras and a development kit as cost-effective solutions for ADAS applications.
