The autonomous solution will be provided by Steer Tech and will be tested in the hourly garage at BWI and on a nearby commuter lot, the Maryland Department of Transportation (MDOT) announced.

“MDOT is a national leader in using innovation to make our transportation network easier to use,” said MDOT secretary Pete K Rahn. “Delivering a system that parks your car for you is perfect for BWI Marshall – an easy-come, easy-go airport.”

In 2018, Steer evaluated its autonomous vehicle system in a closed course at BWI Marshall Airport.

Using Smart Wallet technology, owners earn credits by enabling their cars to automatically report useful road condition data such as traffic congestion or potholes to navigation providers or local authorities. Drivers could then redeem these for rewards such as coffee, or to automatically pay tolls, parking fees and for smart charging electric vehicles. Smart Wallet removes the need for drivers to hunt for loose change or sign up to multiple accounts to pay for a variety of everyday services.

The cab-less T-pod, meaning there is no driver on board, will be used to deliver goods and will operate on a route between a warehouse and a terminal in Jönköping, Sweden, starting from May 15.

In November 2018, Einride and logistics firm DB Schenker initiated the first installation of an autonomous, all-electric truck at a DB Schenker facility. It was the first commercial installation of its kind in the world.

The Swedish Transport Agency has given approval for Einride to expand the application onto public roads, following a satisfactory operation in accordance with Swedish traffic regulations.

Globally, road crashes kill 1.3 million people a year and injure nearly 50 million more. Autonomous vehicles (AVs) have been identified as a potential solution to this issue if they can learn to identify and avoid situations leading to crashes.

Unlike human drivers, these vehicles won’t get tired, drive drunk, look at their phone, or speed. What’s more, AVs will reduce congestion and pollution, increase access to public transport, be cheaper, improve mobility for people with disabilities, and make transport fun again.

After the self-driving car company announced in January that it would create the world’s first factory entirely for L4 AVs it has been searching for the ideal location and has now found it in Detroit.

The company will work with American Axle & Manufacturing to repurpose an existing facility in the heart of ‘Motor City’ and will help revive the area’s automotive industry by bringing back a workforce that has all but disappeared in recent years.
