The AI-powered innovation is designed for efficient container transportation at all terminals, and supports the city’s objectives of smarter and greener port terminal operations.

The launch ceremony was officiated by Liu Chun San, undersecretary for transport and logistics in the HKSAR government and Ivor Chow, CEO of HPH Trust and managing director of Hongkong International Terminals (HIT).

The autonomous truck (AT) fleet vehicles, designed without a driver’s cab, can operate alongside conventional vehicles in a mixed-traffic mode called ‘true’.

The strategic investment and multi-year collaboration will see the two companies work to deploy small, purpose-built EVs designed to optimize how goods move in population-dense environments.

The partnership is focused on unlocking one of the most challenging parts of last-mile delivery: the intersection of roads and road-adjacent spaces such as bike-lanes, shoulders and curbsides.

These are areas where traditional vehicles can face difficulty, and Also’s smaller, adaptable vehicles are designed to be able to navigate them.

“Small autonomous EVs are optimal in these environments,” said Also co-founder and president Chris Yu.

The UK-based company said the license will enable it to work directly with airport teams and partners during the rollout and implementation of its autonomous ground service equipment (GSE).

The approval allows Aurrigo to operate within the airport’s ground handling framework while providing on-site support during the introduction of its autonomous systems.

David Keene, CEO of Aurrigo International, said, “Securing this license is another important step in our partnership with East Midlands Airport.

The approval allows autonomous vehicles begin carrying select passengers, following testing designed to ensure the safety of autonomous operations on SFO roadways. Passenger pickups and drop-offs will take place at the Rental Car Center Level 1 curbside, which is accessible via the AirTrain people mover.

SFO said the move expands ground transportation options for travelers while supporting innovation in the region.

Two autonomous tractors are now operating between the baggage handling areas at Terminal 1 and Terminal 4, transporting passenger bags without onboard drivers. The vehicles are equipped with more than 10 sensors and cameras, enabling them to navigate the airside environment in all weather conditions, including at night and in the rain. Operations are remotely supervised from a control center, where operators can intervene immediately if required.

The launch was officiated on January 20 by Sun Xueling, Singapore’s senior minister of state for transport, and represents a step forward in Changi Airport’s wider push toward airside automation and productivity gains.
